Muslim religious leader urges talks with Serbia government after brawl with police

The Canadian Press, 05/09/2010

BELGRADE, Serbia — A Muslim leader in Serbia is urging talks with the government after his followers clashed this weekend with riot police during a protest in a southern town.

Media reported Sunday that four policemen were slightly injured in the clash with around 1,000 protesters in Novi Pazar Saturday. The protesters claimed a preschool facility was being built at a land parcel claimed by the Islamic community.

Tensions in the predominantly Muslim Sandzak region have simmered since the ethnic wars of the 1990s, including disputes within the Muslim community.

Local religious leader Moamer Zukorlic is accusing Serbian authorities of repression, seeking autonomy for Sandzak. Muslim government officials have rejected the claim.

Government and police have not commented.
