Asylum seekers – obstacle for visa liberalization

Koha Ditore, 12/04/2011
EU countries want to see proof that Kosovo receives, houses and reintegrates asylum seekers expected to be deported from European Union member states back to Kosovo before they consider entering any sort of dialogue on visa liberalization, writes the paper today. The increasing number of the people leaving Kosovo and seeking asylum in EU is said to have been the main reason why certain EU countries are against the start of visa liberalization process for Kosovo.

“You have to understand that when there are so many people leaving Kosovo, when the economic situation is such as it is, when there is so much talk about the country as being a country of corruption and organized crime, the last thing interior ministries of EU countries would want is to remove the visas for the citizens of that country,” said an unnamed EU diplomat.
